I proudly proclaim my unwavering disdain for the character we are discussing. My main problem with Jar Jar Binks is that he is a poorly crafted and utilized character.
1. His speech is difficult to understand. The first time I saw the film I could not understand probably about 25% of his utterances. Later viewings accustomed me to his speech patterns and to date I think I understand most of his dialogue. Of course this pleases George Lucas and company as it pours more money into their bursting coffers.
2. He isn't entertaining. Jar Jar's primary role (in the first film at least) was to add a comic touch to the film. C-3PO was only around for a short while so Jar Jar had to fill his role from the previous 3 films. Well... I know C-3PO and Jar Jar is no C-3PO. Jar Jar provides infantile humor which, I suppose, entertains George's target audience of teenage boys, but doesn't do much for me.
3. Bitterness. Yes, I dislike Jar Jar because of the screen time he consumes. Far too much Jar Jar - the time would have been much better spent on Darth Maul. A common complaint I know...
In conclusion, if George Lucas had made Jar Jar interesting, humorous, and understandable while simultaneously decreasing his screen time I would not be writing this message.
Good Luck to George Lucas - I hope he can improve Jar Jar for Episode II. If he does, I'll be the first to cheer when I hear, "Messa Jar Jar Binksa!"
